Exhibition
This artwork was created to present an environmental issue. It emulates the idea of Edgar Tolson's “Fall Of Man.” I wanted to show people what happens when trees get cut down and when it continues. The amount of damage being done to the forest and what would happen to the land when all the trees disappear. Inspired by Edgar Tolson “Fall Of Man” I used the ideology that Tolson used throughout his pieces. Using religion and craftsmanship to express his culture and his work of using wood.
Planning/sketches/Ideas
4-5 Block prints
Possible wood casing Long Rectangular box, which will hold the prints inside to be displayed. The meaning for the work deals with Environmental issues Inspiration "Tolson- Adam and Eve"(Fall of Man) |
The right is a final sketch that I'll be using for the artwork, due to the fact that is nice and will portray the meaning of deforestation.

Process
At 2:11 there is a short video on the progress of the block print work.
|
Experimenting/IdeasThere wasn't a lot experimenting with the block prints itself. But there was mostly just the casing for the block prints. I had to find the right measurements to hold the block prints. I decided to use a foam board to use as my back to hold the prints and the original plan was to paint the back as well. But the next day the foam board warped and I had to replace it with a wood board instead. Which added a little more work for me, Because I needed to find a way to make the prints stay onto the board and along with the linoleum. So I decided to us the form board again, so that I won´t have to paint over the board and I would be able to have something on the back to allow the prints and the linoleum to hang.

0:37 shows the three pieces of work. Also of me working on one of the pieces.
STARTING AT 1:01- Throughout this video I show the development of the prints and what I did to create the prints and also showing the repetition that I did to come out with a clean print.

Tolson craved many representations of stories: Adam and Eve being one of them. I was inspired not just by the creativity of Tolson's craving, but by the story telling he was able to do. So I decided to use that idea, but instead of using religion. I focused more on an environmental issue. I chose to do Deforestation, which right now is having a huge impact on the earth.
I would say that the work of art can have a religious meaning to it. God being one with nature or nature being God himself. Following Buddhist or ¨The Over-Soul¨ which is TRANSCENDENTALISM. But my intentions were to define the meaning of an environmental issue and not focus on a religious aspect. |
MeaningDeforestation has become a major issue in today global issues. I would say that the world needs to start paying more attention to the amount of damage being caused, because of careless companies. Future Generations of the world will suffer dearly if this issue continues to happen. I understand that resources are the main priority, but companies need to establish an efficient way to literally destroy an entire biome.

ReflectionI would say this project turned out good. There are several things I would change about it; The case I would like to make it larger so I can add more prints and also create more prints. If I had just a little more time I would have had time to develop the story longer. But I made do with the amount of time that I had. The clean lines and contrast of the work are well developed; just a little slower on the print would've made the print look cleaner. The case that holds the Block prints could be prettier, but due to the amount of time I had, there wasn't much to do. So painting it was my only option. But so far the work truly emphasizes the meaning of deforestation.
The work itself doesn't emulate the wood work of Edgar Tolson what so ever, but takes the idea and what the work is trying to say. I would say in the near future to express on the theme that I'm focusing on for this year I would like to hand craft something like Tolson. |
ACT QUESTIONS1) Clearly, explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
Inspired by Edgar Tolson, his series of religious story telling was able to help me develop an artwork that could be able to tell others about the major environmental issue that is going on. 2) What is your overall approach (point of view) the author ( from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration? The research allowed me to help me develop my work and to take something from my research and to use it to grow my artwork. It also helped me develop my art skills. 3) What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas cultures etc? My overall conclusion that I discovered about people is that we need to have more people to be informed of the articles that are coming out on the internet and to take action on the issues that happen. 4) what was the central idea or theme of your inspirational research? I would say the over arching theme of my inspirational research is environmental issues. 5) What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research? The inference I made would be the more news and articles that are coming out. I came to a conclusion that nothing is being changed about the damage being caused on the forest. |
