Exhibition:
This piece was created to present an acrylic self-portrait. It emulates Rene Magritte’s The Son of Man. I wanted to present a mysterious piece for all to question the meaning of the work. Just like Rene Magritte, he presented the visual work and let others try to figure out the meaning. Inspired by Rene Magritte The Son of man I used the same ideology that Magritte used throughout several of his pieces that he’s created; To evoke mystery. The work defines my skills with acrylic and flesh tones.

Rene Magritte was my artistic inspiration, was an internationally acclaimed surrealist artist of all time, yet it was not until his 50s. The painting I chose to emulate is The Son of Man. It is a self-portrait of Rene Magritte with an apple in front of him. This piece is particularly my favorite because there's just a mysterious feeling towards the piece; there i can't find any meaning to it, it makes me think what the actual meaning is to the piece. I question the meaning of Rene Magritte's work especially The Son of Man. Another reason as to why I chose to emulate the works of Rene Magritte, because his work means nothing no matter what he creates his paintings are visual images which conceal nothings; they evoke mystery.
ACT Question:1) Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
My inspiration was able to effect my artwork with the emulation of the painting as well as the meaning which leads the person to view the artwork and make them question what the meaning of the piece is. 2) What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration? Rene Magritte was able to show his artwork visually and keep most of his works mysterious. he focused on showing his work and keeping away the meaning from people. While people viewed his art as visually interesting. i viewed his art more of a message even though his intentions were to confuse the viewer. 3) What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about the people, ideas, cultures etc? Rene Magritte didn't become famous until the 50's and he focused on creating the piece instead of talking about the meaning: that made people question his work and the meaning. Every work ever created by Magritte was mysterious there was no meaning to the pieces he created. He intend to be like that. 4) What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research? I think the overall theme with Rene Magritte's painting is repetition, nature, and myself( feelings, memories, facial features, etc). 5) What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research? I questioned the meaning of Rene Magritte's paintings, and i wanted to understand why he had things in front of his face. Inferences i made about Rene Magritte, he was a mysterious artist but is one of the most famous surrealist artist ever. |
Developing and experiment:
Well before I started the painting process and also the sketching part, I did my research first on which type of culture of art I should use to define my self-portrait and it kind of took me a couple of days before I actually went forward and started working on a sketch. At first I was going to use just an image of me standing doing nothing, but then the sketch of it looked so plain and even if i added the falling man it just didn't suit me. so i drew up another sketch with my hands going to catch the falling man and I just fell in love with the idea so after that I went with that sketch. lots of pictures had to be taken in order to find like that perfect image for my self-portrait.
Reflection:I would say that I am very pleased with the way the piece turned out. I very much enjoy the way it emulates the works of Rene Magritte. I really enjoy painting so this was one of the projects i was excited to do. This piece taught me more about my techniques and also it increased my skills in painting. My favorite part about this self-portrait was creating the work and showing the process along the way. the blending was also my favorite part, because it was kind of hard for me to mix flesh tone to get the right skin tone. countless layers went into my self-portrait. If i was able to redo this i would make the falling man bigger and also change the background instead of having a white, i would add gray to it. i'd probably add more details once i improve my skills even more on painting and flesh tones. But over all i really enjoyed working on this project and the finishing result is amazing. I was able to emulate Rene Magritte and present my artist skills in painting.
