Exhibition text:
This drypoint is created from Akua Ink. Inspired by Rembrandt harmenszoon van rijn and the artwork The three trees. The work demonstrates repetition, tone, and value. The work emulates the etching technique of Rembrandt. The two drypoint focuses on the theme untamed wilderness and the cultivation of man. The intentions were to show what nature looked without man interrupting its peace. But also the other side showing the development of civilization.
Planning/Ideas/Sketches |
Sketches: |
Some cultivation of man and a mixture of nature. Having some ideas of mixing the two or rather splitting it up to show the transition of wild nature and the development of city structures. Images that will be used to help develop the Dry point. Images also take from the famous Japanese anime kimi no na wa.

Experimentation/Technique:
Some techniques that were done, were light etching to add the effects of clouds. I had to use the ruler a lot to make sure my lines were straight. In order to add the dark shadow areas, I had to add plenty of lines and to make sure they were deep. I decided to crosshatch some areas so that I could cover some parts that needed it. Along with the forest, I decided to swirl the etching so that it was easier for me to create the animated forest, which was my intentions throughout the work.

Artist inspiration:
Rembrandt harmenszoon van rijn
The artist that I decided to use to inspire my work is Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn). I went with Rembrandt, because of his well created dry point landscape. The etching and engraving is nicely created. I really enjoy the details of the trees and also the water or what looks to be a river. The Three Trees an artwork that Rembrandt wanted to animated the landscape with many details: an artist sketching on the hill at right, a fisher couple at lower left, and an amorous couple hidden in the darkened foreground bushes. What I want to emulate is the trees from the dry point. I think it is well created and I hope to achieve that detail from my own landscape dry point.
The Three Trees
The Three Trees is Rembrandt's largest and most striking etched landscape. Here he masterfully combined techniques (drypoint, engraving, varied depths of etched lines, and a speckled tone) to create a sense of nature in flux.
Going on with what I am going to use on my dry point. I enjoy the Japanese cities and towns. I think everything is very well structured and it suits the environment. Also inspired by the Japanese Anime kimi no na wa.
Reflection:
The overall design of the work looks nice. I really enjoy the mountain with the forest. One thing I wish that I could've done was add more etching to some parts of the mountain. My intentions were to show the Wilderness being untamed and The cultivation of man. Somewhere along the line I wanted to structure the design to focus on the culture of Japanese towns and also religious ideas. I wanted to emulate the trees from The Three Tress. I think it is well created and I think was able to accomplish some of the details from Rembrandt. What I enjoy most about the second dry point is the development of the city as the man is looking towards it. What I also decided to emulate as well is the clouds that were lightly etched within The Three Trees. I believe what could be improved is the details of the second dry point which is the cultivation. I fell that there are parts within the work that idealistically it explains what the theme is. But appearance wise there could be much details added on in the near future.

Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork?
I have identified the cause effect relationship between my inspiration and my artwork. By using the techniques of engraving, depths of etched lines. Also the animated nature of the piece. What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration? Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) works depict wide range of style and subject matter. Using portraits and landscapes to express biblical and mythological themes. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration? I have concluded that Rembrandt used lots of biblical and mythological themes within his artwork. What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?. The central theme around my inspiration is biblical and mythological themes. What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research? I have inferred that Rembrandt wanted to portray religious ideas into his own artwork. Also depicting certain parts from the bible into his own shape and form. |
